Setting Up A Weight Loss Challenge

July 25th, 2007

Two of my good friends and I have decided to compete against each other in a “Weight Loss Challenge”.  Grand prize?  A new putter for the guy who loses the highest percentage of weight.  Here are the details:

  1. The challenge began last Monday.  Since we all live in different cities, using the same scale would be impractical.  So, we are all using our “home” scales.
  2. After establishing initial weights, I created a spreadsheet using Google Documents.  I created columns for our names, starting weights, current weights, and percentage lost.  Here’s the spreadsheet with fake names and numbers.
  3. I’ll email the guys every Monday and they’ll send me their current numbers.  I then enter those numbers in the spreadsheet so that we have a current view of our progress.
  4. We started in July and we will have a “midway” winner declared in December.  He’ll receive a round of golf, paid for by the other competitors.
  5. Next July, challenge ends and a champion will be declared.  The other guys will come together and purchase a putter for the champion.  Maximum value will be $100.

So, there’s the setup.  Three big dudes who are trying to lose weight.  (I’m actually, weight-wise, the smallest of the dudes.)  So, why did we go with percentage lost instead of pounds lost?  To keep things as fair as possible.  If one of my friends reaches his goal weight, he’ll have lost over 120 pounds.  There’s no way that I could lose that much, considering I’m 31 pounds from my “initial goal weight” and 60 pounds from my “final goal weight”.

I’m excited about watching my friends lose weight and I hope to win the challenge.  But, I’m really not all that “competitive”.  I just want to see us all get healthy.  Seriously, if I lose 60 pounds and come in last place, I’m still a winner.

Was that the cheesiest line ever written by a man?  Yes, NCN, I do believe so.

Off to the gym I go!  Wish me luck.

It’s Monday, Again

July 23rd, 2007

Ah, Monday.  The “first” day of the week.  (Not really, but you know what I mean…)  Time to revamp and restart the old diet.  Actually, I’ve been doing pretty well, but my body must simply enjoy being fat.  Seriously, could it be that my body “wants” to weigh 235lbs?  I’ve been exercising and eating pretty well, but the old weight just hovers between 231 and 238… up a few pounds, down a few pounds… I’ve decided to start a food journal so that I can more accurately track what I’m eating and how much I’m eating.  Perhaps, and this could very well be the case, I’ve been consuming more calories than I think I’ve been consuming.  So, I’m off to breakfast and a workout.

Weight: 235 lbs.

Nutrition Bar Review: PowerBar Triple Threat Caramel Peanut Fusion

July 10th, 2007

As part of my ‘calorie control’ diet, I’ve been eating one or two ‘nutrition bars’ a day. I like to eat one right before I workout and another later in the day, around 3PM. I’ve read several articles about just how “healthy” these bars really are, but I like them because I can use them as part of my overall eating plan, they’re easy to carry, and I always know EXACTLY how many calories I’m consuming.

I eat food because I like to eat food. So, my reviews will focus on taste, texture, and the effect the bar has on my mood (energy level, etc.) I’ll mention the nutritional information, but I’ll leave it up to you to figure out if this bar is “healthy” or not.

PowerBar Triple Threat Caramel Peanut Fusion

Calories: 230 Carbs: 30 Fat: 8 Protein 10

Taste: A

I really enjoyed the way this bar tasted. It tastes like a ‘real’ chocolate bar, and it’s just chewy enough. Snickers-like?

Texture: B+

When I eat one of these, I feel like I need to use my “teeth”. The peanuts are crunchy and the chocolate will “melt”.

Energy: B

Surprisingly, even with all of those carbs, I don’t feel “pumped” after eating one of these bars. I strongly suggest that you eat one of these while “on the go” or you might get the “after carb” sleepy feeling after an hour or so.

Cost: B

I found these on sale at my local Kroger for about $1. Looks like you could go to Amazon and get a box of 15 for about $16.

PowerBar Triple Threat

Overall: B+

I’d give the PowerBar Triple Threat Caramel Peanut Fusion a strong B+.  I like the taste and it feels like “real food”, but I’m not a big fan of the higher calorie count and the carb/protein ratio.

A New “Starting” Point

July 9th, 2007

I now weigh 233 lbs.  That’s about 3 pounds more than I weighed a few months ago, but 14 pounds less than I weighed on January 1st.

I was at church camp last week and I had the opportunity to focus on my emotional, spiritual, and physical health.  I feel SO much better than I did last week and I’m ready to get back to the gym.  I feel like I did back in January, so I’m pumped about losing weight and getting into shape.  I’m headed to the gym.

One quick thing.  Eating every 2 to 3 hours has REALLY helped to reduce my cravings for junk food and fast food.

I Had A Great Week

July 8th, 2007

I’ve just returned home from a week at church camp.  I spent a week as camp-director.  The work was exhausting but I managed to focus on my diet and I even managed to get a bit of exercise.  (By the way, I always misspell the word “exercise”… shouldn’t it have a “z”?)  I’ll have an official weigh-in Monday morning, but before I left, my weight had ballooned back to 239.5 lbs!?!  Yuck!  It felt great to be eating fresh fruit, granola, and nuts.  In fact, the only meat that I’ve eaten in the past seven days was a little turkey on a couple of small sandwiches.  I could easily become a vegetarian.  I’ll weigh-in tomorrow and let you know where I stand.
