Learning To Love Fruit

I’ve been learning to love fruit.  So far month, I’ve eaten plums, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, peaches, and pears.  It’s amazing.  Once I stopped eating sugary-snacks, and started eating more fruits, my taste-buds changed.  Now, when I eat a piece of fruit, I actually taste the fruit.  Plus, now that I’m far less food, overall, each mouthful has more meaning.  Slowly but surely, I’m changing my attitude about food.  (Granted, I still dream of French fries and Snickers, but I’m learning to eat fresh, healthy fruit.)

Twinkie: Deconstructed This Book Will Change Your Life!

I’ve just finished reading Twinkie: Deconstructed by Steve Ettlinger. Let me tell you, don’t read this book unless you are prepared to rethink your relationship with moder food. Basically, Steve set out to study the ingredients in a Twinkie – and you will be AMAZED by his findings. I’ve read through the first half of the book and I’ve already decided to get rid of more than half of the foods that I regularly eat. Did you know that the vast multitude of vitamins you eat are created in huge vats in China? Did you know that they spray CHLORINE on white flour? Do you know how they make High Fructose Corn Syrup – a major ingredient in most modern foods? (Hint: Think vats of acid, boiling water, and thousands of bushels of corn… processed in 7-story high metal containers…)

I don’t care if you download audio book in iTunes, check the book out from your local library, borrow a copy from a friend, or purchase a copy from Amazon, you need to read this book.  (If you click through the link below, I’ll get an affiliate fee.)

I cannot OVERSTATE the impact of this book.

A Not-So-Startling Startling Insight

I just finished writing a post for another website and I was about to fix some breakfast when, like a 98 miles per hour inside fastball, it hit me.  I can feel as good as I want to feel if I will eat right and exercise.

Pause.

Pause.

Yep, after 15 years of worrying about my weight and feeling lousy when I eat the wrong things, it finally – in a moment of absolute clarity – appeared before me.  I can be thinner and healthier if I simply eat the right things, stop polluting my body with junk, find the time to move a little, and control my portions.

Pause.

Pause.

Yes, I realize the you already know these things.  And, I already knew these things…

But, as I was standing there, contemplating blowing my “diet” for the 15,000th time – I realized that whatever I put into my stomach would ultimately determine how I felt during the day – and the choice was absolutely, 100% UP TO ME!!!

Drink my water, eat my fruit, watch the fats, do the cardio, stretch, breathe…

Folks, this could be it…

Can one moment, one second, one millisecond… reverse 15 years worth of bad decisions?  I might just think so…

NCN now tries to describe the moment of clarity:

Two sets of hands reach up… one set goes for the chocolate-covered cereal bar, a handful of cookies, a jar of peanut butter, and a knife… the other set reach for an apple, some high-fiber oatmeal, and a glass of water…

The scene shifts… thirty minutes after the meal… one guy, the cereal bar guy… sits, bloated, frustrated, and tired… it’s 7:00 AM and his day is ruined… the other guy, he’s full, energized, and ready for the day…

These things flashed across my mind’s eye… boom… so clear… make better choices, over and over, and you will feel better, doofus…

As always, to be continued…

Weekly Health Blogs Roundup : I Want A New WordPress Theme Edition

Here are a few posts from my fellow bloggers that caught my eye:

Tricia is “preaching to the choir”.  I too struggle to eat healthy foods when I’m traveling.  I did notice that the last time I went to Florida, for vacation, a few convenience stores had begun to offer some healthy-alternatives, like fruit and unsalted nuts.

Building Nutrition reminds us of a valuable truth.  If you want to lose fat, you must do some cardio!

Lazy Man is kicking the caffeine habit.  Good luck… from a fellow diet cola addict.  (Actually, here in Georgia, we call almost all colas “cokes”.)

MiddleAgedShed hits a plateau.  I suppose that I actually need to begin to lose some weight before I can then hit a plateau.

My feet hurt… maybe this is why!  I wake up in the morning and the bottom of my right foot is killing me.  I need to do some stretching.

I’m looking for a new WordPress Theme.  The one I’m using now is very, very boring.  Until a few days ago, I was satisfied that No. Calories Needed would continue to be a small, post once-in-a-while blog.  But, not that I’ve recommitted myself to “getting healthy”, I want to put the same effort into the site design as I have my other sites.

(If you haven’t already done so, be sure to check out No Credit Needed and the 33 Days and 33 Ways To Save Money And Reduce Debt series.)

I Had A Great Monday! No Dieting For Me!

I don’t usually look forward to Mondays. Why? Because, for most of my adult life, “Monday” meant starting a new diet. But, I’m not “dieting”. I learning to plan for each meal, eat the right amounts of food, and actually look to food as “fuel”. So, I’ve made a few major decisions.

1. I will no longer weight myself. I realize that this is a weight loss blog, but it really should be more of a “health blog”. So, I’m going to focus on feeling better, looking better, eating better, and planning better.

2. I will no longer “talk” about my weight with other people. I’ll talk about healthy eating, proper foods, etc… But I’ve decided to STOP talking about how “much I ate”. No more!

3. I will focus on people and not food. When I’m out with a group, I will talk more, eat less.

4. I will blog about my journey. Faithfully. Not because I have to, but because I need to. There’s a difference.

5. I will set standards for MYSELF! I will not longer worry about what others think about my weight “problem”. Heck, my wife’s about to have our third child. “Somebody” likes me! :)

For those of you who have been reading, I realize that the posts have been few and far between. Dealing with food stuff is very, very hard for me… but I can promise you that I wake up every morning and commit my life to progress.

If you want to follow me as I move from “food obsessed” to “life obsessed”… subscribe to the No. Calories Needed Feed.
