Giving Up Soda, Diet Cola, Pop, Mountain Dew, Coke, And Pepsi

June 1, 2008 by NCN Leave a reply »

I have consumed my last Diet Mountain Dew.

As part of my new project, chronicled over at 99 Changes, I have decided that my first change will be that I will no longer consume soda, diet cola, pop, Mountain Dew, Coke, Pepsi, or an other carbonated beverage.

I’ve read several articles about the dangers associated with consuming soda.  And, I’ve also read articles which claim that those dangers are overstated and that soda is relatively harmless.  Either way, I’m making this decision based on the following factors -

I’m tired of wasting money on soda when tap water is free.

I’m tired of dealing with sugar and caffeine highs.

I need to drink water – and when I drink sodas, I don’t feel like drinking water.

So, from this point forward, I’m no longer drinking sodas, period.

All excellent reasons to kick the habit!
    Good on you!

I’m very sensitive to caffeine, and I don’t enjoy the jittery feelings it gives me, so I avoid it… one except is a cup of really good green tea once in a while. Love green tea! :)

Let us know how it goes; you can do it! :)

I gave up soda a year ago January. It wasn’t easy – I went from drinking a minimum of 4 12-oz cans of Coke (with caffeine) every workday, to quitting cold turkey. I had a horrible caffeine headache for 48 hours.

But – on the other side of it, the benefits are incredible – I dropped several pounds with making any other changes in my diet or workout routine, I stopped needing medication to manage migraines (and haven’t had one in over a year), I have more energy…

To date, its the single best health decision I have ever made.

    Good luck!

I quit drinking pop for those same reasons. It started at restaurants when I was sick of paying $2.50 for something I could get for free, and evolved into a decision to put less chemicals into my body (diet). Every now and then I indulge but it’s a conscious decision that I don’t take lightly or often.

  5. When I first started my new diet I had thought about giving up caffeine, but so far I haven’t. I have limited my diet soda so that I am more like 50/50 with water.

My plan is to drop caffeine if I hit a weight loss plateau. I am not sure I can give up all my vices though…

    Thanks for the shout out…

Great choice, and good luck! I quit drinking soda and eating fast food on Jan. 1, and it’s been the best thing ever. Sure, you’ll miss soda for a while, and even have cravings for it, but just drink some water until your brain quits telling you that you need soda, and you’ll feel a lot better. If you eat fast food, get rid of that and you’ll lose weight without having to do anything else.

I just realized today that my horrible headache is because I am addicted to Dr. Pepper!! Does anyone have any idea’s on how to get rid of this horrible headache without going back to the pepper?

I quit too! Hopefully this works! I did once before but after about 2 months I fell into the trap :(

I only drink about 2 cans of Mtn Dew a day but I want to make it 0! for good

I quit MT. DEW yesterday, and I had a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HEADACHE all day. I usually have at least one 20 oz per day.

Hopefully, I am getting a head start on my New Year’s Resolution of NO SODA!

I have quit Mt dew several times when I hit a plateau and lost 10 pounds each time. The headaches come from caffine withdrawals. I use Ripped Fuel to give me the caffine to avoid the headaches. You can get it at Walmart for about 18 bucks. It is widely used by bodybuilders. DO NOT mix with any other medications and I mean any, especially pain of anxiety meds. This can be very dangerous.

Gave up Mt. Dew two days ago. I took one excedrin when my headache wouldn’t go away. It went away! Day two I took any excedrin but the headache wasn’t as bad. Tomorrow I hope I don’t need one.

I took menstral medication for the detox headaches. They have caffeine in them, and headache relief. It took two weeks for the withdrawl symptoms to fade away, but now I crave water more than anything. and I’ve lost over 10 lbs! best. decision. ever.

I have been off of soda for two weeks (one here and there), but I can suck in my stomach now! I have done this before, but you get comfortable and forget.

I cut the sugar filled sodas, diet sodas, juices and sports drinks about 9 years ago (when I was in high school) and only drank water. Unfortunately, I picked up again in college mainly with the sugary energy drinks for late night studying. I’m back to no sugar drinks. Some weeks I’ll go only water and crystal light.

  17. Roger says:

I am one week into giving up pop. Hope to lose weight as a result

One week off the stuff and I already see a diffrence. Not a big user (one or two per day), and went cold turkey. Sleeping better, bloating is way down, more energy. Replaced it with water and tea. Good luck to all.
