Nice to find a place like this. Let me tell you my story (I'm proud of it, and, to tell you the truth, I kinda fell like a recovering alcoholic):

I started my weight loss and exercise program in Jan 7, 2008. As of today, Jan 31, 2009, I've lost 37kg (~81 pounds), and am 3kg away from my ideal weight according to my doctor. I've also gone from 38% body fat to 22% (still need to get this down to 18%), from using size 40 pants to using size 34 (and I'll start using 32 soon, since the 34s are fit me a bit loose), exercise AT LEAST 4 days a week, and feel better than I've ever felt in my life.
I can do now things that I just couldn't before, which is very encouraging. For example, when I started out, I could barely walk on the threadmill for 20min at very slow speeds, now I can run for an hour, stop, and be breathing normally in just a few minutes. I can lift several times the weight I used to a year ago. And don't even sweat going up 6 floors of stairs at work.
And all it took was a little patience and persistence - and a warning form my doctor that either I started exercising and loosing weight, or that she was certain I would have Type II diabetes before I turned 40 (I'm 30 now).

If you can, I would suggest getting the same scale that you had before. There is a 4-7 lb difference in scales that i have noticed. Mine at home is 7lbs less than the one at work (for our biggest loser weigh-in) and there is a 4lb difference between my coworkers and the one at work.
