My goal, creatively named The 929 Project, is to lose 90 pounds between September 29, 2008 and September 29, 2009.
After 4 months -
Weight
I am down (a little more than) 27.8 pounds. Official weigh in days are Mondays – and my scale is broken! I have been convinced, for some time, that the scale was dying, and this morning, it died. So, I’m going to go buy a new one, and I hope that I’ve lost a couple of pounds since my last official weigh in. Check back Monday to see how I’m doing.
Exercise
I am now working out four to six days a week. I am also training for my first 5K. I can now run (almost) 2 miles, without stopping, compared to four months ago, when I could barely jog one-quarter of a mile.
Attitude
What can I say? I feel like a new man. Seriously, I love going to the gym, I love feeling in control, and I love the fact that I’m losing weight. Even on weeks where my weight stays unchanged, I still feel good, because I’m doing the right things and becoming and healthier person.
Eating
124 days ago, I decided to stop eating refined sugars, starchy foods, and assorted junk. I also gave up caffeine and soft drinks. I radically changed my eating habits. Since then, I’ve stuck to my plan, and I feel better than I have ever felt in my entire life. Seriously, less is more.
Writing
I’m actually posting several articles a week, here at No. Calories Needed. Connecting with my readers keeps me motivated.

Yesterday, I completed week 4, day 2 of the Couch to 5K training program. I will be running my first 5K at the end of April, and I’m very excited.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a fast runner. So, creating a time time goal for the first 5K has been difficult. It still takes me 12 to 13 minutes to jog/run/walk a mile. Yesterday, I managed to do 2 miles in 25:52 – roughly 13 minutes per mile.
I’m hoping that my times will improve, as I continue to follow the program. I’m not really worried about my time, but I don’t want to move so slow that I’m just shuffling along.
I think I’m going to try to run the 5K in 40 minutes or less. A 5K is 3.1 miles, so that averages to about 13 minutes per mile.
On the one hand, I wish that I was much faster.
On the other hand, just four months, I couldn’t jog 1/4 of a mile. Now, I can run, without stopping, a mile-and-a-half, and if I add a little walking in, I can make it the full 3.1 miles.
After yesterday’s run, I had a little time for some weight training, so I focused on my biceps and the AbSolo machine. If your gym has an AbSolo, you have to try it. It’s awesome.

I weighed myself yesterday morning and today, and my weight is the same as it was two weeks ago. I really didn’t expect for my weight to go down, due to the fact that I was unable to exercise last week.
Yesterday, I started Week 4 of the Couch To 5K running program. I’m really excited about my upcoming 5K race, and my mom, who started running last year, might be able to come up and run the race with me. Also, a friend of church has started training, and he wants to run with me, too. How cool?
I’m using the Couch To 5K podcast to keep myself motivated and on track. Right now, I’m able to run for a longer time than ever before, but I’m still so slow. Seriously, I just kinda shuffle along, but, hey, I’m running!

Imagine me, Mr. New-To-Running, falling in love with a running shoe. But, alas, I have!
Seriously, I love my new Asics Men’s GT-2130 Running Shoes
They are comfortable, considerably more light-weight than the cross trainers I was running in, and they still provide the stability that I need. Plus, they look cool, too. I like them in the color black, but several other colors are available.

Running shoes come in a variety of styles and fits. Personally, I need a stability shoe, because I’m still overweight. I have very low – almost non-existent – arches, and these shoes feel great!
I will only wear these shoes when I’m running – either on the treadmill or the track. I can’t wait to finish my first 5K – sporting my brand new Asics!
Seriously, I love these shoes.
