Running Update And Day 9 Of Following The 4 Golden Rules

I just stepped off the treadmill – I managed to run 1.1 mile!  I’m super-excited.  I feel great.  Tomorrow will be a ‘rest day’.  I’ll do some walking and stretching, but I’ll wait until Thursday to actually run again.

As for eating – I cannot get over how ‘in control’ I feel.  I’ve been following Paul McKenna’s 4 Golden Rules for 9 days now.  I haven’t cheated – because you can’t really cheat.

When I am hungry, I fix myself a plate of whatever foods I really, really want to eat.  Lately, I’ve been enjoying lots of grilled chicken and steak.  I’ve also been eating potatoes, corn, green beans, a few potato chips, some cantaloupe, and dill pickles.  At night, I’ll have a couple of small pieces of chocolate – say, one to two ounces?

After fixing my plate, I’ll fix a glass of water and a glass of diet soda.  I then drink about 4 ounces of water and I sit down, at the table, and I eat.  I do not watch television or read the paper.  I focus, with all my effort, on eating and enjoying my food.  Usually, after about 6 to 10 bites, I can feel myself getting full.  After about 12 bites, I am full.  I stand up and leave my plate where it is, covered with a napkin.

If I get hungry fifteen minutes later, I’ll go have a couple more bites.  If not, I’ll put the plate in the refrigerator and eat what’s left a few hours later.

I am down (at least) 8 pounds – This week, I’m not going to weigh myself until Saturday morning.

I Just Ran A Mile Without Stopping And I Feel Great

Two hours ago, I stepped off the treadmill, having just run a mile – without stopping!  I am so excited.  Less than a week ago, running 3 miles seemed like a dream, but now it seems like a real possibility.  My little sister started running a few months ago – and she completed a 6 mile run the past Saturday.  Her hard work has motivated me!

I called her and she said that I might want to think about getting some ‘running shoes’.  I agree.  My current shoes feel heavy – and I don’t want anything slowing me down.

As for my diet, I’ll more on that in the morning.  But, suffice to say, the ’4 Golden Rules’ are amazing.

How My Weigh-In Almost Ruined My Weight Loss

I just weighed-in. I’m now at 249 lbs. I started, last Monday, at 257 lbs. I’ve lost 8 lbs.

And, my weigh-in almost ruined my future weight loss.

Why? Well, I’ve been following the ’4 golden rules’ – eating when I’m hungry, eating what I want, eating consciously, and stopping when full – and I’ve been loosing weight. But, some habits die hard. As soon as I saw that number, I was tempted to ‘wait until later’ to eat, so that I could step on the scale and weigh a little less. In the past, if I lost a few pounds, I’d immediately abandon whatever eating plan I’d been following and go into starvation-mode. Fearing that I’d regain the pounds that I had lost, I’d refuse to hydrate myself and I’d go without food for as long as possible. Then, of course, I’d crash-and-burn and fill my stomach with junk foods and soda.

No more. This morning, I weighed in, made a notation, and fixed my breakfast. I don’t care if the scale bounces around a few pounds – My primary goal is to be in control! The weight will drop, as I learn to manage my cravings and eat properly.

Last nights episode was pretty good – but not nearly as good as the first episode. It felt a little ‘forced’. But, I’m sure that there are folks who needed to see it, and I’m sure it helped them. For me, the first episode will always be my favorite. If all goes well, it will be the episode that changed my life!

Getting Ready For Episode 2 Of Paul McKenna’s I Can Make You Thin On TLC

Episode two will air in less than three hours. I have set the DVR to record the episode, but I hope to watch it live. Tonight’s episode will be about emotional eating – and Paul is going to introduce his tapping technique. I must admit, I was a bit weirded out by the tapping technique when I first saw it, but I’ve tried it, and amazingly, it works.

This morning, out of habit, I stepped on the scale – and I’m down 8 pounds. My goal is to lose 80 pounds – so that’s 72 to go!

A Great Day Outside At The Easter Egg Hunt

We are home from today’s Easter Egg Hunt.  We had a great day.  Several of my family members were able to come down, including my little sister and her husband, who ran a 10K this morning!  Wow.  That’s 6.2 miles.

I also did a bit of running – .5 miles to be exact.  :)

My goal is to be able to run a mile, without stopping, by the end of the month.  I’m pretty sure that I can do it – and I’m going to give it a shot tomorrow, after church.

Here’s how I handled eating today, surrounded by folks who were eating cakes and cookies and candies -

I fixed my plate – one hot dog w/ bun, a few chips, a bottled water, and a diet soda.  I sat down, and I ate SLOWLY.  Very, very slowly.  (On a ‘normal’ day, I can eat three hot dogs in about 2 minutes. Or four.)  After eating half of the hot dog, I began to feel full.  I ate a few chips, took a sip of water, and went to toss the football and hang with some friends.  About 20 minutes later, I came back, slowly ate what was left of the hot dog, drank some soda, and I was finished.  I wasn’t hungry, I didn’t want any cake or candy, and I actually ENJOYED myself.

The weather was beautiful – beyond beautiful.  There was a slight breeze, and it was warm enough to be comfortable in or out of the shade.  I even got a little sun.

I’ll weigh in Monday morning – but a big test of how the plan is working will be when I put on my suit for church in the morning.  Will it be tight or will it fit right?  We shall see…
