How I Feel After 21 Days Of Healthier Eating

Three weeks ago, I gave up sodas.

Ten days ago, I gave up candy.

Two days ago, I got rid of all of the unhealthy food in our house – all of it!

I replaced the sodas with water – and a lot of it.  I replaced the candy with fresh fruits and nuts.  I replaced the healthy food with ‘real food’ – chicken breast, zucchini, onions, lettuce, apples, blueberries, rolled oats, etc.

How do I feel?

I feel great.  I’ve lost most of the puffiness in my face and my hands.  I now have energy for walking and doing push ups.  I’ve also begun to discover taste buds, long deadened by repeated exposure to hyper-sugary foods and sodas.

Have I lost any weight?

I’m not sure.  Instead of obsessing about my weight, I’m just eating what I think I should eat and I’m avoiding tempting foods and situations.  I feel lighter, but I’m not going to weigh myself until July 1st.  This blog started as an attempt to live a healthy life.  Taking these steps is pushing towards that goal.

Do I miss the junk food and sodas?

Sodas – Nope.  In fact, about a week ago, I took a sip of one of my favorite colas – and I was shocked by how ‘nasty’ it tasted.

Junk Food – Kinda, but not much.  I miss ‘having something to eat’ – but I don’t miss how junk food made me feel.  Mainly, I miss salty foods like french fries and chips.  But, as for sweets, like chocolate, I’m totally over them.  I don’t think I’ll ever want a cookie, again, to be honest.

I’m stoked about the changes I’m making, and I can’t wait to experience the long-term benefits of those changes.

  1. For salt go with almonds…. Salt was my one big issue…

They are tasty, healthy, and salty. In my program 5 almonds is one protein serving… I get 14 servings a day. But my program is pretty restrictive.

  2. its amazing to me how I still do salt (beef jerky. love. not giving up) BUT am still farfarfar less ‘puffy’ with out the processed white carbs.

    M.

  3. Life’s no fun without cookies. It’s admirable what you have achieved but be mindful not to go to far the other way; everything in moderation is the best and easiest way to live life. Instead of giving things up completely, allow yourself one cookie once each week, on a given day (i.e., Sunday).

I eat a low GI diet six days a week and then have one ‘anything goes’ day on a Saturday – and it’s literally anything goes. Cookies, ice cream, chips, French fries, donuts, Chinese food, McDonalds, whatever. This stops me getting bored and keeps things interesting. For my body, it’s great, as it stops my metabolism slowing down – the day when my calories spike actually encourages weight loss as my metabolism doesn’t know what to expect and so keeps busy.

Mentally, it keeps me fresher as I know it’s only a few days of being strict before I can have whatever I like.

As I said, life is no fun with cookies. If you suck all the pleasure out of food, you’re really in for a tough time down the road. 🙂
